When is a library a library?

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Here’s a blog link from a guy who just “whipped up a basic library that contains a few useful things.”

Today I bring to light the potential for abuse and overuse of the term “library.”   The term and its definition may need protecting along with privacy issues in today’s society.

In the past week, I have noted print advertisements for the Liquor Library, read a classified ad for library developers (this firm was looking for clerical staff), and shared libraries of songs on itunes.

The sciences have a long standing secondary use for the term library, a collection of materials for common use.  The secondary use or generalization of the term is expanding.  Question - If the term library morphs into a generic term, what happens to the relevancy of the term librarian

Please advise if I am merely highlighting covert marketing already in place by the library community.

disclaimer to above link - I have no opinion as to the effectiveness of linked marketing group and share the podcast as food for thought.
