Today WDFPL staffers begin calling those registered for Professor Carrigan’s original program to register them once again if they are still interested in hearing this informative historian’s insights on our 16th President.

Dr. William Carrigan, Associate Professor of History, Rowan Univeristy -
“Abraham Lincoln’s greatness can be attributed to three separate factors.  First, he possessed an uncanny political knack for reading the public mood and choosing the right course of action to push the public toward his vision without breaking his support from his base in New England or from moderates in the lower North.  Second, he was able to admit his mistakes, correct them, and improve while in office despite fighting a great civil war.  Third, he possessed the ability to communicate the aims of the war in a poetic but comprehensible manner to ordinary Americans.”

We’re celebrating the Lincoln Bicentennial 1809-2009 @ WDFPL.

Personalizing service @ your library

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Libraries provide many opportunities to share knowledge and find answers.

The Fray released some new work lately, though this tune still inspires.

Main Entry:   personal touch
Part of Speech:   n
Definition:   any contribution someone gives to make something more personal, as a gift

“personal touch.” Webster’s New Millennium™ Dictionary of English, Preview Edition (v 0.9.7). Dictionary.com, LLC. 16 Feb. 2009. <Dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/personal touch>.

Can ”personal touch” or “heart” scale across various types of libraries and library systems?

Is the ”personal touch” valued by library administration and the public if not quantified in statistics?

Does the “personal touch” garner public support for libraries?

Is the “personal touch” our responsibility if not detailed in a job description?

Thoughts?

YouTube charging for downloads?

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Is charging for video downloads the optimal method for monetizing YouTube service?

My favorite posted comment:

Download? download? Isn’t the whole point of YouTube that you don’t need to download videos anymore? Why would you want to store videos on your PC when you can just leave them in the cloud and watch them?

Why protect updates on Twitter?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

I joined Twitter  last week.

Here’s my question, what is the passion with protecting updates on a social network platform?

I understand if an individual is working for the FBI or CIA or even if he/she is part of a group using the space for collaborative work in the short run.  Stalking issues may also warrant such action.

  Consider the following:

This person has protected his updates.

You need to send a request before you can start following this person.

Does the ”sending a request” message pandor to ego?  Is the process designed to infuse a sense of orderliness and control?

It seems I am not alone in my curiosity on the topic.

Volunteers are vital in tough economic times.
