Let’s see blindness more clearly this month.

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Yesterday a visually impaired library user, her friend and I shared some ideas on available materials to make library use easier for non-sighted individuals.  The library user checked out a few Playaways and luckily I had information from the library’s September vision program on hand to provide her some take away materials.  She even took an application for the NJSL Talking Book and Braille with her, as downloading audio to a flash drive seemed like an interesting idea .

This is an inspiring classroom writing challenge.

Here are a few other efforts to help folks see things more clearly with or without 20/20 vision.

Thanks to the New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille for sharing this talent.

Ode to October by Ann Dow

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

September is a special treat,
but October is the month to beat.
The colors take our breath away
and make each day a holiday.
The reds and golds and rusty browns
draw tourists to New England towns.
But we don’t have to travel far,
nor do we need a motor car
to gaze upon an autumn scene
that illustrates the word “serene.”
The leaves don’t simply disappear;
they say “so long until next year,”
and then they fall upon the ground
without a murmur or a sound.
We know that come another May
we’ll wake up to that magic day
when trees all winter bare and stark
will turn our world into a park.
We’ll welcome back our noble trees,
enjoy their shade and gentle breeze.
For now let’s simply contemplate
the month that now we celebrate.
