I've toyed with protecting my updates on occasion and have found when they are protected I get fewer requests from people who seem to be just trying to up their number of followers. If people have to request to see your updates, they seem to be more likely to read your bio and determine whether you really have things in common. For some reason I've also had far fewer spammers following me. Finally, I've had my home burglarized three times (most recently about five years ago, so it's definitely not Twitter-related), so protecting updates lets me tweet about traveling without worrying too much about a total stranger getting any nefarious ideas while I'm away.
